Are you actually looking for a HALL or just a nice place to hold the reception. Because if you’re open to other options, you could have it in a park, or at a beach. Or someone’s home or backyard.

Try the local LA boards on theknot.com

Since most reception halls make the money by making you purchase from them, try non denomiational churches that might have a hall for rental.Try Rotary Clubs, American Legion Halls, Womans clubs for available options. Its not going to be easy, and take alot of phone calls to get this done. Id try the churches first. Use google to get references using google maps, enter your city and put recetion hall or rentable facility.
Also try finding someone who lives in a condo and ask about getting them to rent the rec room there, thats what my daughter did, but be warned, the deposits are steep and the clean up must match thier expectations or they will keep the money and damages will be charged to your friend who has to pay for it and sign for it. Our problem was the wood floors got scratches and the trash was put exactly as they said, and she was charged for extra anyhow.
Most places that are simply reception halls are more comforatable knowing the caterer and staffing so they make arrengments with them than change a problem with someone they are not aware of.

My fiance and I are running into the same problem. Churches are great to work with. You can easily find a church that will seat around 250 in their hall. Just call around and find one that will allow a non-member. I don’t know where you are planning on getting married but you might try to get married at the same place. If the church thing doesn’t work for you try a community center. I have found a whole bunch of really nice ones in Orange County. The only reason we didn’t go for them is we are shooting for around 400. But if you are going for under 300 then you shouldn’t have much of a problem. I’m sure you’ll find something in LA.

    Good luck!

    has ideas.

Pasadena Masonic Hall or Los Angeles River Center are good starting places.

Betty H Reckas center is nice and allows catering. Also, try the yacht club in Newport. They have a brand new rec center that allows catering as well.
