My hair stylist says he can do my wedding day makeup for $40. Before he told me he does makeup, I was planning to go to a higher end department store makeup counter (like Bobbi Brown or MAC) and get my makeup done. But if you get your makeup done at a counter, is it generally free? And you’re expected to buy some makeup? How much?
Where did you get your makeup done for your wedding, and what do you think is the better option for me, both with experience and the price difference? Because even though the makeup counter might be free, I will have to buy some makeup. Thank you!!!

Definitely get your wedding makeup done by a makeup artist/wedding specialist! They tend to be more experienced and have pictures of their previous work, so you can get an idea of their style and how good they actually are.
At a department store makeup counter, they use products that are samples. These products have been opened, so they have already oxidized with the air, making them less long-wearing and more likely to clump-overall, just plain bad. Plus, a lady at a makeup counter’s main job is to sell makeup, not to apply makeup, so their skills can’t compare to those of a makeup artist. Also, they are on a time crunch (they’ve got to sell stuff to other customers) so they’re not going to 100% focused on you.
It’s your wedding makeup, I really think you should spend a good amount of money to look the best on one of the happiest days of your life
btw: I’m not a makeup artist, not trying to endorse makeup artists. This is just my opinion
My mom and all her friends got their makeup done by makeup artists when they got married, and they looked amazing!
Always have a trial done. Usually when you go to a makeup counter in a dept. store, it requires some product to be purchased, and then it’s free. I used to work for a makeup counter- the deal was that you book a makeover, and it costs lets say $80.00, then, afterwards, you get to pick $80 worth of products to take home with you. Some (not all) counter sales people are not trained makeup artists, sometimes they are trained ‘on the job’. I like makeup artists better- they can be at your house the day of your wedding and you dont have to run around town! its more relaxing to get ready at home and have everyone there for you. Always trial your makeup artist before your wedding, thats all i can say to help.
don’t go to a department store!! I did for my wedding it was free but it was bad!! I used Lancome. You don’t have to buy anything but they push you to. They don’t have training or anything anyone can get a job doing it so it’s like having a friend do it for you. Some people may be better than others but don’t chance it. It’s your wedding day do it right I will next time I get married
