We would have a western style reception anyway afterwards. It’s an arranged marriage in vietnam, this is common in my culture. So, do you think we should have a traditional wedding ceremony or a western style ceremony ?? We would have to wear traditional clothes if we do the traditional ceremony, which is fine with me.

We have been together for 7 years. It took him 5 years to propose (I was in school and had requested no engagement until after I was done). However we have now been engaged for over 2.5 years. We didn’t set a date immediately since we got pregnant about 2 months after we got engaged and then about 6 months later his mother passed away and then we had the baby. But that was all over 1.5 year ago.Financially we are tight but figure it is workable in the budget. So a few weeks ago after me complaining he had decided that we would just go for the plunge and had said I could go dress shopping and that this Christmas we should get married. So I went and found a dress, put a deposit on it(this dress is perfect for a winter wedding but not a summer wedding) and started to call halls to book for the reception. Then he changed his mind. Now he wants to want to wait until Spring to start planning and then have the wedding sometime next summer. I feel embarrassed since I am now having to call people and change the information, plus what do I do about the dress. If I let it go I loose the 100 dollars plus I am worried that I will start all this again in the spring and he will do the same thing again. He doesn’t seem to be able to make up his mind. Is he just doing this to make me happy or does he actually want to get married? He asked me if I wasn’t happy with the way things are currently and why am I so stuck on having the wedding so soon? I am frusterated!!!

I would just like to know the answer to this…We all know that Hindus are supposed to wear red lehenga on the wedding….and it should be done taking the 7 pheras….but many of my US friends are wearing white ballgowns like the Christian weddings and some even chose to have a ceremony in a church like the christians when they are actually Hindus…..Some of them did have a Hindu ceremony at another function later on….but then doesnt it become more expensive?? Already wedding is an expensive matter…Then why do the Hindus wear the beautiful white ball gown and have their wedding at the church then?….I have attended at least 7 Hindu wedding here in the US…and despite being Hindu they have done it the Christian way….Why is that so? Can anyone explain?

I am born and brought up in the US in a Hindu family and I just think that our Hindu traditions shud be honored if you are a Hindd especially when it comes to weddings.

Thanks.
This is to darkvelv….
What is the benefit of doing YOUR out- of- culture ways??…How can you offend us by insulting our traditions….Listen okay…I am American by all means…I do everything the US ways…but I follow the Hindu religion. There is NO benefit of breaking away from rituals and traditions AT THE TIME OF MARRIAGE. As Kashvi explained below…We cannot come up with our own creative ways to get married under some tree…We are not God. The Marriage ceremony is a ceremony…so do what is ceremonial!!!…..I dont understand how these people can offend our Hindu religion in the face by walking down the isle in a white dress!!!
At least on this day the couple should ask God’s Blessings for a happy life ahead. Instead they are putting God aside just for the sake of fashion. Again I am all in favor of a MODERN style wedding but the basics of wedding traditions shud be followed. Nobody can change that. Every one of us organises our weddings according to our beliefs.

I’m concerned about it being Memorial Day Weekend and about 1/3 of our guests are out of town guests. How soon is too soon? Plus they have to book the hotel by April 22nd. RSVP date is May 2nd. Thanks!

….Invites are all stamped and ready to send, its just that I’ve heard I should wait until the middle/end of March from some “etiquette” people.. including the woman who did my invites (who has been doing invites for 30 years….)

Thanks everyone!!
They have to book their hotel room 30 days in advance because I set up a block of rooms at two different hotels, each having a discounted price for us. The hotel will release those rooms to the general public 30 days before the wedding and discounted pricing will no longer be available.

I was married a year and a half ago, and ever since I’ve had about ten wedding photos sitting on top of our living room bookshelf. Over four are of my husband and myself — the others are just favourites that feature friends and family who were there. Next to them sits our porcelain cake topper, and two champagne glasses.

I mention this because a neighbour I was sort of friendly with today came by and asked to borrow some cleaning supplies. She was in the living room while I was getting them, and when I came back, she said, “You know, it is extremely inconsiderate of you to practically shove those pictures in the face of anyone who visits. Your wedding was like two years ago. Get over it!”

I was absolutely shocked. I have NEVER once pointed these photos out to any guest (except those that ask to see them), and I have never drawn her attention to them at all. She has only been in my house a handful of times and she’s never mentioned this before. The pictures and items are so high up, it’s not even like they have a glowing sign pointing to them!

I had never heard that there was a set of rules you were supposed to adhere to as to when you took down your wedding photos and other items, especially if they’re unobtrusive. I mean, it’s not like we’re talking about Christmas decorations in February here, and I always figured if you had a happy marriage you’d LIKE to leave these things out. But am I wrong here? Is this one of those unspoken rules of politeness I’ve never heard of? Should they just be retired to a photo album after a while?

I just like having them there where I can look at them when I want to without dragging out an enormous photo album. My husband likes them too. So is my neighbour just crazy? (She’s never getting an invite back, anyway.)
