I’ve worked at my current employer for 6 months. A co-worker, whom rarely speaks to me, invited me to her Bridal shower. The invitation stated regrets only. I truly forgot. In the last month, my father has been diagnosed with cancer, My mom had part of her foot amputated, and my daughter spent a week in the hospital. My mind obviously was more focused on the crumbling health of my family as opposed to a bridal shower for a “mute” co-worker. This co-worker called my office phone today to see if I would be attending her shower. I told her that I was sorry, that I had forgotten. She sent an e-mail not 5 minutes later telling me that showers and weddings cost money, and to make sure that I sent in my RSVP card for her wedding. She also stated that she doesn’t make alot of money, and was footing this bill by herself. Needless to say, I am embarrassed that I forgot, and really insulted that she responded the way she did. I did however contribute to the office shower gift. Any thoughts on what my response should be?
