How much do grocery store wedding cakes cost?

How much does a wedding cake purchased from a grocery chain usually run?! I don’t want to spend $500 on my wedding cake, but do want the traditional look of 3 tiers. I was thinking I would get a more plain one and add fresh flowers!

It’s really hard to say because it depends on the size. The 3 tiers can be various sizes so you need to talk to the bakery and tell them the amount of guests you want to serve so you can get an exact quote from them. It’s worth the time though because you can probably get a good deal.

A nice-quality groceery store cake is going to run you probably between $150-250 for a 3-tier cake that can feed 150-200 people. Here’s a tip: get your cake at Safeway. I’m not kidding- their cakes are prettier and better-tasting thant any of the fancy bakeries out here in Denver. We get all our birthday cakes from Safeway, and I’ve decided to do the whole cupcake tower instead of a traditional wedding cake, so Safeway will be making my cupcakes. Their icing is so good, and the cake is always really fresh and moist. I haven’t had a bad one from there yet! Plus, they are very affordable- since I’m doing cupcakes, my situation is a bit different, but they quoted me 60 cents per cupcake, and that is with a little flower decoration on top of each one. For the 150 cupcakes I’m going to need, that is only $90, which is actually $60 less than what I originally budgeted for cake!!

Here’s where not to get your cake: Wal-Mart (I love Wal-Mart as a store, but their icing tastes like lard); Albertson’s (ditto the lard-icing, plus they never taste fresh); King Soopers (I don’t know if you have King Soopers where you are, but they are a Kroger store, so if you have any Kroger affiliates, they probably all use the same bakery recipes, and it’s not good!!)

I also hear Costco has amazing cakes for a great price, but I don’t know because I don’t have a membershp there.

A 3 tier at somewhere like Sams Club or Costco would have cost me $36. Fed 80-100. Alberstons, Smiths, Macys, Dans, etc are around $75-$200.

Mine was from a grocery store, 3 tier, and it was around $300.00… I had them decorate it in just polka-dots, and then we put flowers on it… it ended up being very nice.

keep in mind that you will probably have to pay a delivery fee….

    My 3 tier from wal-mart is 189.00 + tax.
We also got my cousins cake and my moms wedding cakes from them and have had great luck.

I called Walmart a while back just to see what they charge and they quoted me $153 for a three tier cake.

Well I’d try a cake shop first. Just to see if it is that different. And if I was going to get a cake from a grocery store it would only be publix. They are the only ones that really do a good job and you wont have to worry about it looking like crap. I have seen them from Walmart and other places and they looked crooked and awful. Maybe think about doing some nice cupcakes. you can put them on a cupcake tower.

Too much for the disgusting cake you get. Save your guests the misery of eating tasteless junk and spend your money in a high-end bakery. Cheaper is not necessarily better.

Every grocery store is different so you have to go in and ask.

Price depends on where you are located (NYC or LA will be more expensive than Idaho for example) and what that particular grocery charges. Albertons is more expensive than Safeway which more expensive than Walmart.

Number of tiers usually doesn’t matter, it is about number of servings. A plain grocery store cake should run you less than a dollar a serving.
