How large is a 50-lb wedding cake?

My grandmother is insisting she and my mom had 50-lb wedding cakes, so I should have one, too. I’m totally up for it. But I’m wondering, how big is that? Can anyone give me an idea? Links to pictures, maybe?

You order cakes according to how many people you are serving not how many pounds of lard & butter you feel like molding into a cake. Tell Gramma to take a hike.

Pillsbury Bakery sells 50lb wedding cake mix!

    Anyway,

I Chelsea Clinton’s cake had over 125lbs worth of ingredients (pictured above, I believe). I couldn’t find a cake that was named 50lbs or weighed 50lbs…that’s the biggest cake I could find to help you compare.

It is approximately a four tiered cake, decorated…..BUT cakes of old weighed more because ingredients were heavier (even flour was coarser) than it is today. I would look at pictures from your grandmothers (if she has them) and your mothers to judge. Also was that counting the pillars and plates that held the cake up???? Those used to weigh a ton…even in my day, we had to put a deposit on them and you have to return them to the bakery within a month of your wedding.
    Just some thoughts….
