How do you plan a non-religious wedding?

I have only been to a couple of weddings, and they were quite traditional, with a pastor, singing hymnes and talking about God and such.
Well, my girlfriend and I are engaged and beginning to plan the wedding. Just wondering what people do, or what you have seen to make a nice ceremony without going into religious preaching and singing.
Of course, plenty of the family in attendance will be religious, but we are not, nor are our parents on either side. Nor are most of our close friends that will be in the wedding party.
So how do you take up the time with something nice, memorable and ceremonial, that will make everyone happy, and last more than 3 minutes?
