Can I wear black to an outdoor wedding?

I am attending an outdoor early evening wedding/reception at the end of March. Is it appropriate to wear a black dress? The dress itself is basic but very classy looking and I was planning on wearing some type of black sandal type shoe (no hose). I don’t want to look as if I’m attending a funeral but I do love this dress.
